Odor Genie Frequently Asked Questions

All Odor Genie products have been discontinued by the manufacturer.  For other odor control, odor elimination products go to the Odor Genie article.

What does Odor Genie do?
Odor Genie Eliminates unwanted odors.  It does not mask odors, does not emit odors and does not mask unwanted smells.  Just ask the Odor Genie to zap scents like vomit, urine (even cat urine!), fish, mildew, sewer, feces, garbage, ammonia or any organic odor.

How does Odor Genie work?
Odor Genie is a natural crystalline mineral that eliminates odors through a process called Cation Exchange Capacity or "CEC."  Odor Genie has a super negative ion charge.  Organic odors such as the ones listed above have a strong positive charge.  As the old saying goes, "Opposites attract," and that's a fact!
When Odor Genie is released from its bottle or bag, it immediately begins to attract positively charged ions.  These positively charged ions are odors that most of us do not like.  Your dog may like them, flies may like them, but we are quite sure you do not like them.
Once odors are attracted to this product, the material hold on to them tightly.  Imagine that this genie is a magnet and these odors are pulled to the magnet.  That is how the genie works.

Where can this product be used?
Removing unpleasant odors from carpets, sofas, drapes, chairs, beds, pillows, closets, bathrooms, hotel and motel rooms, hospitals, nursing homes, automobiles, pet clinics, sewage drains, diaper pails, garbage cans, dumpsters... anywhere odors need to be eliminated.

How does one use Odor Genie?
There are two forms of Odor Genie and each form is highly effective for different uses:

1. Odor Genie, Fine Powder Form
   This form is very fine, silky to the touch and is used by sprinkling the powder directly on the affected, odorous area.  Excellent for cat litter boxes, carpets, etc.  One pound of Odor Genie Powder covers 100 square feet.  Sprinkle material on the affected area, allow one hour and then vacuum.  If the affected area is wet, apply Odor genie to wet area, allow to completely dry and then vacuum.
2. General Purpose Pouch, Coarse Rock
   This form is broken into small gravel size rocks and packaged in a mesh bag container.  The mesh bag allows Odor Genie to be exposed to the air so it attracts odors and pulls them in.  A one pound sack will pull odors from 20 feet away! Simply place the bag in the odorous area and allow a couple of hours for Odor Genie to take in the odors.  Can also be used in air conditioner return to keep homes free of excess odors from pets, cigarettes and mildew; use the 2 pound pouch for this location.  Keep a 1 pound pouch in your closet to help keep odors from being absorbed into your clothing.

What odors will Odor Genie Eliminate?
Organic odors with a positive ion charge: pet, urine, vomit, feces, garbage, beer, smoke from tobacco & wood, ammonia, mildew, all forms of decomposition, sewage, carbon dioxide, Freon, formaldehyde, ethylene, nitrogen, methyl alcohol, helium and many more.

What odors will it not Eliminate?
It will not eliminate any odors with a negative ion charge.  Examples are chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, gasoline, paint, paint thinner, aerosol deodorants, incense, perfumes, smoke where chemicals are the source.

In what circumstances will it not work?
Odor Genie will not work in temperatures over 115 degrees Fahrenheit, below 40 degrees on in direct sunlight.

Is the Odor Genie reusable or disposable?
Direct sunlight cleanses Odor Genie.  Placing the mesh bag of Odor Genie in the direct sunlight causes Odor Genie to release odors it has attracted.  Once the sunlight cleanses the genie, it is once again ready to eliminate odors.

Will the Odor Genie Powder harm my vacuum cleaner or other cleaning equipment?
No.

What is the shelf life of the powder?
In the original container, the full strength shelf life is over 20 years!  The lid must always stay tightly closed so that the powder is not drawing odors from outside the container.  The powder form is a "one time use" situation.  The powder is best suited for areas where even distribution and quick odor control is desired.

What is the shelf life of the gravel form?
The gravel form (packed in mesh bags) will last indefinitely.  Each bag can be re-used over and over again.  Once the bag has reached its full capacity to attract odors, simply place the bag in direct sunlight for 24 to 48 hours.  After this time in direct sunlight, the product will be cleansed and ready to use again -- as good as new!

How much product will I need?
Gravel Form packed in Mesh Bags

• Automobile, SUV, Bus, Boat, 1 room (up to 300 square feet):    1 pound bag
• Refrigerator, Freezer, Closet:    ½ pound
• Shoes:    ¼ pound

Fine Powder Form

• Carpet:    1 pound per 100 square feet
• Bed Mattress, Sofa:    ½ pound
• Litter Boxes, Diaper Pails:    ¼ pound

Can you use too much?
No.  Unlike a lot of products, the more you use, the quicker it works!  The only problem with using more than the recommended rates is Odor Genie may clog up the vacuum cleaner if you try to vacuum it all at one time.  A new vacuum bag may be required to complete the clean-up.

What is wrong?  I still smell cat urine after applying Odor Genie!
There are special considerations when it comes to cat urine; especially in places that a cat or cats have been using for a long time.
When a cat urinates on carpet, it usually urinates in the same places daily, weekly, monthly -- until the pet owner notices a distinct, unmistakable odor.  Each time the cat urinates, it soaks deeper down into the carpet, sofa or any other porous surface, creating more and more gaseous odors.  The carpet and pad trap in ammonia, the urine turns into salts and the salts continue to build up, as do odors.  due to continuous wet conditions, mildew begins to combine with the urine odor, making a bad situation worse
If the cat urine is only a week old, the situation is easy to treat.  The urine has soaked into the carpet and the upper part of the pad.  Use one pound of Odor Genie fine powder directly on the affected carpet area.  Allow it an hour or two to attract the urine odors, then vacuum.
If the cat urine is a month old, the situation is still easy to treat.  By this time, the urine has seeped down completely into the carpet pad and is just above soaking into the floor.
Sprinkle one pound of powder directly to the affected carpet area.  Allow an hour or two to attract the urine odors, then vacuum.  Repeat this procedure again.  If odors persists, repeat again.  If odors still persists, see "urine is more than a month old" section.
If the cat urine is more than a month old, special procedures are in order.  The cat urine is now in the carpet, carpet pad and seeped into the wood or concrete floor.  The urine has turned into salts inside the carpet fibers, pad and floor.  All of these areas are completely saturated and the wood or concrete floor will hold on to the gaseous odors -they will not be released as easily as from the carpet or carpet pad.
First apply one pound of Odor Genie powder directly on the affected carpet area.  Wait an hour, then vacuum.  Now, raise the carpet and carpet pad.  Clean the carpet and pad to remove the build up of urine salts.  Clean the salt build-up off the floor.  You can probably see the build-up of urine salts on the floor.  I the carpet tack strips have been affected, replace them.
Apply 1 to 2 pounds of Odor Genie directly to the floor.  Now the carpet pad and carpet can be placed back down over the floor.  Sprinkle ½ pound of Odor Genie on the carpet and brush it in to the nap of the carpet.  Leave Odor Genie in the carpet, do not vacuum! 

When the cat urine odor re-occurs, vacuum this area and re-apply the powder, brushing it in to the nap of the carpet again.  Repeat as often as necessary until no odors occur.  Have patience!
