The Stable Fly is a medium (about 1/4 inch long)
which can easily be mistaken for a house fly. The house fly has a sponging mouth
part (for ingesting liquids) while the stable fly has a piercing sucking mouth which is
designed for piercing the skin of animals and sucking blood.
The stable fly life cycle: egg, larvae, pupae and
adult. The eggs hatch within three days of being laid and the larvae burrow into the
breeding material where they will feed. The larvae grow for 1 to 4 weeks before
pupating. Adult Stable Flies emerge from their pupa in 1 to 3 weeks. The
entire life cycle can vary from 3 weeks to several months. Contributing conditions
include sustained moisture and temperature.

As with all flies, eliminating the breeding
material will stop the breeding of that fly. This will be next to impossible (in
many cases) with Stable Flies. Proper, ongoing sanitation in horse barns can help
eliminate Stable Flies or at least greatly reduce the population.

- Eliminate or reduce the material in which the Stable
Fly breeds, especially horse manure or chicken manure that has contaminated hay or straw.
- Eliminate all possible entry points to ensure that no
flying pests invade your home.
